If you make your purchases on line at ANY of their listed stores, you get a small percentage back from them. I'm not much of a shopper, but do check there first whenever I need anything...why not? The rebates are different for each store...I've even had a few for 20%. It's nice getting even a small savings on stuff these days. I've been kind of waiting for a few pictures of the day to do a blog. As usual, I didn't take any, but Brian's dad, Bill did, and as soon as I see them, I'll send some along.

Danny and his family, John, Wendy and her family and I gathered at Wendy's house for dinner and a gift exchange which we decided this year would be very frugal in lieu of the economy. And it is the thought that counts, right? With no more little kids up here anyway, even the teens were counted as adults and everyone drew a name to be gifted.

We did the thing where everyone draws a number, lowest number goes first to pick a gift from the pile, next person keeps their gift or "steals" the first one, and so on. It was so much fun!! We had already established a $20 max for gifts, so I thought it might be a huge challenge, but it really wasn't. And everyone seemed pleased with their surprise...most especially Johnny, who drew Sham-Wows and was delighted! It was a hoot...he was actually searching out things to clean up....Danny said he intended to make full use of his son's zeal :)

Wendy and Brian did most of the dinner, including Brian's famous deep-fried turkey. Brian's dad and his wife, as well as his brother and his wife spent the day there too. It was so nice seeing them all again...they're such nice people.

The two nights before Christmas, and two days following, we spent playing games, checking out our little local casino, eating everything in sight, and just enjoying each other. It's so rarely that we get Danny and his family here that it was just fabulous. His kids aren't even kids anymore, they're so grown up now, and so much fun. I think the twins are harder than ever to tell apart, but they have distinctly different personalities. So nice seeing how beautifully they get along, like best friends...I was impressed. Stephanie and Brooke are so close too...had great fun together. Karlee got a nice soft "blankie" for her gift, and was delighted...she's a blanket kind of girl :)

It would be wonderful if the whole family could be together some holiday, but with a family the size of this one, it's logistically impossible...but, I can dream. I do hope that our talked-about family reunion can maybe happen this Summer. Are you all thinking about the possibility? Linda and I have talked about it some, and Lori suggested maybe the end of June would be good. If we could do it up here, the different families could all stay at either my, Wendy's or Lori's house and spare the expense of getting rooms. We could arrange (again, Lori's suggestion) to maybe get Bower's Mansion all day for a Saturday, and then get together over the next couple of days for whatever else we wanted to do. If we could make it a 3-day event, we'd get in lots of visiting too. Sure would like to hear everyone's thought on this.

Back on earth, on December 8th, I had to have my sweet dog, Cayce put down. It just broke my heart...he's been a wonderful companion and much loved for 11 years...I miss him a lot. But, it was the humane thing to do...he was quite ill...I couldn't even justify more tests and prodding...he really left a hole here though. My other dog, Tux, was so sad and brooding for quite a while. He's coming around now, as am I, so I'm paying lots more attention to him.

I've decided to get with the 21st century and purchase a larger screen TV. Not huge, but bigger than my 27 incher. I rationalize that it'll be so much better for my ageing eyesight! Since I only have, or want, one TV, I might as well see it better. Also, my fridge, a 20 plus year one, is on it's dying last gasp, so I'm getting another one of those too. Fortunately, very fortunately, I hit a nice large jackpot at said local casino, enough to pay for both...I'm ecstatic about that!! Am waiting till next time John spends a few days out here to go with me to find the right ones...cheap. :)

I don't know how many of you have heard that our Brooke, Wendy's eldest, has decided to join the Army! She's already done all of her preliminary testing, gotten the papers signed, and will leave in mid-August to Boot Camp in South Carolina and then on to Texas for 22 weeks of study for her chosen job, Mental Health Technician. I'm very proud of her. She thought long and hard, considered the pros and cons and it's what she really is very anxious to do. Wendy's already missing her...me too...but it'll be something she really wants to do and the educational perks are great. So, everybody pray for her...please. :)

I love reading each and every one of your blogs, and especially seeing the pictures...watching the babies grow is such fun.

Pictures will follow....hopefully soon....I promise. They won't be Chelsea or Nicole quality, but hey...

Love you all....Happy New Year!!!!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

Ok, Time for another Poll....you can choose more than one. This past week, Shelley and her kids came to town for a few days...was so great having them here. Unfortunately, Danny had to work and couldn't join them, but it was at least a chance to reconnect with Shelley and the kids. They stayed at Wendy's and were excited about sleeping outside to view the Perseid Meteor shower...very impressive in our huge Nevada sky, and with no light pollution to dim the effect.

We all went to see Gramma Carrie (now 95 years old and so tickled to see everyone). I should have gotten a picture with her and the kids, but as usual, I totally forgot about that...and had the camera in my purse too!

After our visit, we all went to Lori's to visit with them and enjoyed Spaghetti dinner with the Crockers. Here's a picture of (from left to right) Brooke, Stephanie, Jarrett and Johnny, with little Naomi perched on the girls' lap. They're all so darn cute and growing up before our very eyes. I think the twins are looking more alike as they get older..sometimes still get them mixed up.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fPGCi6-0PQA/SKWYrWQC0KI/AAAAAAAAAD8/SbwrAHzIAQ4/s320/PICT0106.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234758012362739874" />

I hated to see Shelley and the kids leave...would be so nice to keep them nearby.

This coming weekend is going to be busy busy busy too. Tomorrow, I'm going into Reno for Amy's shower in the morning (can't wait to see her) and then in the evening I'm going to my 55th class reunion dinner. The thought of sitting at a table with a roomful of people I haven't seen since 1953 is both exciting, and a little daunting..will TRY to remember to take some pictures. The following day, they're having a picnic at Reno High for all classes, and will be going to that with a friend from high school whom I've known since 3rd grade (1943). At least I have seen her recently, she came to visit me last year, so there'll be one person there that I know...that'll help.

John is staying at my house to care for the dogs, and I'll be staying overnight Saturday at Lori's. Chelsea and Amy will both be there and I'm so excited to see them!

I hope everyone's enjoying Summer as much as I am :) Later...

VIRUS ALERT!!!!!!

BIG virus coming

I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!

I checked snopes.com, this morning, and it is for real!!

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next several weeks. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD,' regardless of who sent it to you.

It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc (C drive) of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list.

This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it.! This includes all cards, too. Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where your vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS.
REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US.

Happy Fathers' Day!!!!

Wishing all of you Fathers a wonderful day, being pampered and adored by all present.

We had a lovely "meet baby Jane" day on Friday. On the 24th, Jarrett and Johnny were 12...the following day Baby Jane made her debut, and the next day Devyn and Chelsea added another year....I have to get a new calendar with bigger boxes. Happy Birthday to all of you!!

The earth's been doing it's trembling thing here for the past week. You've probably all heard that on Friday (I think it was), there was a 4.5 centered just West of Reno. It toppled cans off shelves, cracked some foundations, and jangled a lot of nerves in the Northwest part of town. Out here in Dayton, I haven't felt a thing...although Wendy felt one of them. John said he felt the 4.1 this morning at 4:30 in Reno.

The radio has been broadcasting an update almost every hour..there have been hundreds of small aftershocks starting back in March. Some people in the Mogul area west of town have temporarily moved from their homes, hoping that things will calm down. There have been the usual and expected warnings from the "experts" about the possibility of a larger one looming. People are being urged to stock up on necessities and develop a plan of action should that happen...never hurts to be prepared.

I love Spring, earthquakes or no. All the trees are blossoming now and the weather's perfect. Windows all open...no need for AC...lovely warm days and nice cool nights. The wind has been pretty relentless the last couple of weeks....had to replace part of my garage roof, but that seems behind us, for now...in Nevada you just never know.

I never tire of looking at the pictures and videos you all post...what a great thing that is for large families. The great-grandkids number is expanding...11 now, and will be 14 by the end of the year! You're a busy busy bunch! :) Later...

A Few More Pics..

The picture that I really wanted to show was a really cute one of Cora and Jim, but for some reason, I can't get it to upload....will keep working on it...

Only 13 more years till she'll want a real one....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fPGCi6-0PQA/R_wQpKa7XFI/AAAAAAAAACg/30UPKvakLSQ/s400/coracar.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187039170181946450" />

Men at work....with those heavy bowls...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fPGCi6-0PQA/R_wRF6a7XGI/AAAAAAAAACo/SQsOfxGOw9E/s400/guyscook.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187039664103185506" />

And back at home....puppy love...John's Mojo and my Tux

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fPGCi6-0PQA/R_wSHKa7XHI/AAAAAAAAACw/Njrzk3p8uRk/s400/doglove.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187040785089649778" />

A Fun Visit

Chelsea and her family were in Reno for the weekend. It was really nice seeing them. It'd been a while. I took a few pictures, most of which didn't turn out (a photographer I'm not...and my camera is old and doesn't do the fancy tricks) So, here they are..it was such fun watching Naomi and Cora interact, they're adorable together. Lori and Chelsea fixed a yummy spaghetti lunch, complete with raviolis and salad....so good! It's always tastes better when someone else cooks.

Technobabes with Jim...check out Naomi's expression...so sweet...
<img style="display:block; "Dexter" is different, but a bit too dark for my taste, although, "Criminal Minds" is probably just as dark and one of my very favorites. Waiting for new episodes of "Brothers and Sisters", another favorite, and "Jericho" is bogging down a bit.

Would love to hear everyone's ideas on American Idol. My money, so far, is on David Cooke, he's SO talented, although his smarmy little personality could use a makeover.
I also really like David A...if he could just duplicate what he did with "Imagine", it'd be awesome. Made me cry. I also like Michael Johns, who reminds me of a young Neil Diamond...wow. Seems the boys really have more talent than the girls this season. Carly is mega-talented, could be another Barbra or Celine I think, but holy cow, I wish someone would dip her in a nice warm vat of bleach for a day or two..that right arm gives me nightmares. Thank heavens the screeching Amanda has retreated to her Harley...sheesh....although, I did think she was at least different.I think Brooke is sweet, but overrated (I know, that's a minority opinion...everyone seems to love her) I'm betting that Kristy or Ramiele will go home this week, unless either of them totally surprises with something fantastic.

John spent the last week with me...as always, that was so nice. We went to Wendy's house for an untraditional Easter feast of Pizza and Wings. It was nice visiting with Wendy, Brian, Karlee and Brooke who are both growing up much too fast....they're both just so sweet. Wendy hasn't been feeling well..having lots of health problems...I'm hoping she'll be on the mend soon. John helped me set up a Netvibe page...that was fun, still under construction.

I'm glad Jamie got the Book Club page started...good job Jamie! It'll be great hearing everyone's thoughts on the book. Enough for now...love to all....hope you're enjoying Spring, wind and all.

Just Checkin' In..

A couple of hours ago, we had the weirdest weather thing going on...it was pretty spooky. It'd been cold but clear all day,and the radio said there was snow in the mountains, but just a dusting here overnight. Anyway, all of a sudden it got really windy and very suddenly it started to hail. It was so noisy that the dogs got pretty nervous, but I thought it was kind of exciting. It kept up for about 5 minutes. I went out back to check it out, and the porch was just covered with fingertip sized hail...(teeny little baby finger size). I crunched my way across the porch. Now it's quiet and clear again....Nevada weather, it just keeps us guessing, right?

I know many of you are down in Oceanside enjoying the doings...am green with envy...can't wait to hear all about it...

I've been really busy trying to get my little business going...it's slow getting started, but will hopefully pick up....in the meantime, I'm enjoying having to do X number of things every day. When you're retired, the brain kind of goes into hibernation sometimes...not good. I joined a networking group...that'll be a new experience too..and fun.

On that note, I just received the book that we're all going to read (The Forgotten Man) and it's really so interesting!! Took me a while just to get through the introduction...mostly establishing a time line for the depression years...what lead up to it. It's really interesting to me, since my Mom came to this country early in the depression and I was born a few years after it started...it's fun putting all of that in context of when I was a child. Seems a lifetime away...So Jamie...how are we doing this?

Amy, we need a full report on your cruise :) Sending love and hugs to all of you..

New Business!!

Well, I'm jumping into business again!

With prices of almost everything rising faster than we can keep track, I've decided to become a Dealer/Distributor with MAGICKIDS USA. This is a company that buys up kids' clothing in huge lots and sells them at drastically reduced prices. The prices are excellent, usually between 50-70% less than in the stores. You can select clothing by brand name or by category. There is a full money-back guarantee for all purchases you're not happy with, or if you find the item for less money anywhere else...how cool is that!

For those of you who buy children's clothing, please check out www.magickidsusa.com and mention discount code MK50532 to get the discounted prices. I have no contact at any time with whoever buys, it's all done from the company on computer. So, go look...please :)

In other news, it's snowing again here..just gorgeous!

I've been so taken up with the political news, caucuses and such. I went to the caucus here in Nevada and it was a new and interesting experience...so glad to hear that Linda, Jamie and Jim did also. Lori tells me that Jamie will be a delegate...go Jamie!! Although we're for different candidates and even parties, I think it's fabulous that we're getting involved...this should be a crazy time from here until November :)

Chelsea, your trip sounded wonderful! Used to love those cable cars...your picture in the little hat is adorable.

Back to clearing snow.....don't forget to check out the website...it's a win-win.

Cayce in the Snow

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fPGCi6-0PQA/R3-5mLIzoTI/AAAAAAAAABo/oCxdY0O6gG4/s400/PICT0074.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152040564211032370" />

Woohoo...Winter Wonderland!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fPGCi6-0PQA/R3-wpbIzoSI/AAAAAAAAABg/L8XWllJSwzM/s400/snowtable.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152030724440957218" />
It's unbelievably gorgeous here this morning, with about 6 inches of new powdered snow and more coming! I shoveled a little path from my back door to the edge of the porch and have been throwing the frisbee for the dogs, they love it! Right now, the sun is out, making it even more beautiful.

Meanwhile, in nearby Fernley, all is not so calm. Up to 3800 residents have been affected by a break in a levee on the Truckee river. Early this morning, it broke, putting hundreds of homes under three feet of water. Helicopters have been brought in to pluck residents from rooftops.

I've been watching and listening to news accounts of what's happening in California, and hope that all of you down there are safe and warm. I finally got to see and spend a little time with Madelynn and Caden...they are just too cute for words, both of them. Madelynn was in full-smile sweetness, once the bath was out of the way...didn't love that too much...and little Caden just toddled all over the place..he's such a little man.

My flight was calm and uneventful, peppered by the constant coughing and sneezing by what seemed like everyone on the plane...except me...until I flew home of course, when I joined the chorus. :)

My Linda was there to pick me up..was so excited to see her!! We went directly to Chelsea's and had some time (very little...it passed quickly) with everyone else. It was great seeing all of them enjoying and rocking out to Shawn's latest Christmas present (Rock Star). Those kids are all so impressive in their musical abilities..although I must admit that I recognized neither any of the songs nor the lyrics. I thoroughly enjoyed it though...nice to see everyone having such a good time. I hadn't seen Devyn (she's so adorable, pregnant) or DeEtte for quite some time so that was a treat too. Little Connor is becoming quite the young man, handsome and sweet....missed seeing Lily, who'd gotten sick and couldn't join them...will look forward to seeing her too. Amy and Justin were there too, for a little while...they were headed out back to SL but we did get a few minutes. The kids had a ball in Cora's toy closet...what a neat thing that is!

The time in Mesquite, at Linda's house, was everything Christmas personifies. Their house was beautifully decorated, inside and out, and just felt like Christmases past to me. Terry prepared fabulous meals, both on Christmas Eve and Christmas day...that boy can cook!! Terry, Jason and Jordan had prepared the Kielbasa and Pirogi on the days before (the girls who marry those guys are getting a bonus with their cooking ability...that's for sure). Rachel was there with little Jonas, who's a delight..so friendly and happy..all boy. Sarah and Jeremy, Sarah's Dad, and of course the little twins rounded out the group. Three two-year-olds around the table were amazingly contented and a joy to watch! Elizabeth and Elijah have such good appetites and really seemed to enjoy all the festivity. It reminded me of when my kids were toddlers...all the anticipation looking forward to Christmas day. The table was set so beautifully, complete with a lace tablecloth, lovely China (Terry's Mother's) and crystal for our faux champagne.

Jordan played his Bass for me...he's SO talented!! I could have listened to him a lot longer, and hope to..down the road. :)

Bob, Sarah's Dad, had recently returned from a trip to the Holy Land, and brought his laptop with photos...they were impressive and beautiful...was so glad he shared them with us.

The funnest of all, naturally, was watching the three babies interact :) They're all affectionate and darling...and get along so well. Of course, they were in heaven with the new toys, and each other. It's hard on little ones, with all the over-stimulation, but they sailed through it nicely. The twins, whom I hadn't seen since they were about six months, have turned into completely adorable little people...they even cuddled onto my lap for a story at one point...I was thrilled! Little Jonas is a real cuddlebug too...sure loves his Grandma :) They all chatter away in toddler language, which, believe it or not, is pretty darn understandable.

The day after Christmas, Linda and I went out for breakfast, so I got some one-on-one time with my girl :) Actually, we got lots of visiting and reminiscing done...talked about Christmases when the kids were little...and remembered our Debbie....felt her really near...know she'd be so happy that we were together and enjoying the little ones.

So! Christmas was a complete joy for me...am so glad I decided to spend it down under. Seems there's never really enough time to enjoy people on a personal level any more, what with our lives going different directions. When those times of gathering do happen, it's especially sweet...and so memorable.

I hope all of you have a Happy New Year...and that there'll be time for more get-togethers....(reunion sounds really good to me) Love you all so much...

Christmas Wish!

The cartoon was created by Joshua Held in 2002, recording was made by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters (Atlantic Records, 1954) and song was written in 1942 by Irving Berlin.
ENJOY!!! Wendy did the rest of the cooking and I brought a sweet-potato dish that turned out to be a total dud...even from my point of view. I'd love to be a great natural cook, but that ,not having happened yet, is I guess out of the question at this point in time. Thank heavens the family has so many good cooks!

After dinner, with everyone totally stuffed, we played "Tie One On" ... it was kind of nice having a smaller group this year. I for one felt much less festive ..as nice as Thanksgiving was, with John, Wendy and Brian, Brooke and Karlee...I have to say I'm glad it's behind us. This was the toughest one in many years, since Linda and Terry(and our whole family) lost Joshua. I was thinking of Debbie and missing her holiday brightness. I know she'd want us all to enjoy the season and be happy, but frankly there are moments and days that I'd like to bury myself under the blankets and not come out till the holidays are over. This too shall pass, I know. It's true that we all have so many blessings and reasons to be thankful...thanks ,Linda, for reminding me of that.

Now...if we can just make it through Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wishing you all a lovely holiday, with family, good friends, delicious food and wonderful memories of Thanksgivings past.

John and Mojo are staying with me this week. In my Senior year in High School, I played the lead in "Brigadoon" (which was originally a singing production, not a dancing one thank heavens), and the Senior class play "June Wedding". Unfortunately, they were in rehearsal at the same time and were presented a week apart. I kept getting the names of the leading men mixed up...one was Billy and the other, Tommy. Fortunately it all came together at show time..loved it.

2. I remember going to piano lessons in San Francisco when I was 6...on the streetcar, by myself! Catholic welfare paid for my lessons...they were $1.50. A couple of years later, I went to live with my Mom and Brother after having lived in foster homes for my first 8 years.

3. I remember Lori learning to read Braille when she was little (9 or 10 I think) so that she could "read" in bed after lights out..(after almost burning the house down with her little lamp under the covers) I remember Debbie going after a bee on our front lawn, using the heel of my good shoes...she'd been stung and said "I'm lookin' for the one that stung me, and when I find him, I'm gonna eat him!" :) I remember Danny overturning our car with four teenagers inside, and nobody getting a scratch!
I remember Linda and Danny coming to get me at a neighborhood park carnival. I'd been working one of the booths(something about milk jugs..hey it was over 40 years ago). Anyway, I shushed them away and as they turned I saw the back of their heads were both bloody! They'd fallen off the merry-go--round..I felt like demon-mom at that point. I remember John telling a concerned teacher, who was trying to help him find something interesting to do since he was ahead of his class and bored, that he wanted to build a bed. I remember Wendy undergoing repeated blood tests and xrays as a tiny tot with that awful brace on her little leg...never crying.

4. I hated History in school but love it now. I have a very inquisitive mind and will ferret out every detail of something that interests me, often to the chagrin of those around me.

4. I have a passion for animals and politics, alternative medicine, nature, babies and books....not necessarily in that order. I treasure meaningful conversations about almost anything.

5. I really have to watch assuming what's in the mind of others. I tend to jump to conclusions...big time.

OK....I tag everybody who hasn't already done this little exercise :)

Test

I can post to the blog now Mom. This neighborhood, being comprised of mostly retirees with only a few families with kids, doesn't get the T-or-T crowd. Every year I buy a couple of bags of candy, just in case, and every year I end up eating it all myself...trying to be disciplined about it and do one piece a day, but we all know how that works out!

It's much more entertaining to go to the family blogs and check out all the little ones in their costumes anyway...they were just all so cute!

Halloween morning however was wonderful! Wendy and I spent it having breakfast with Mikal...and that was a complete surprise to me, didn't know he was coming, which made it doubly enjoyable. We talked and talked and hugged and hugged...Mikal's always been the best hugger. :) He and Cory and John. Wendy had gone to the doctor early. When I picked her up afterwards, she said we had to go to her shop, that she had a surprise for me. I knew it wasn't my birthday or Christmas...but when I saw Mikal, it felt like it. It was just a really special time...and made my day.

Chiliness is here to stay, I think...nice cold nights and beautiful sunny days. I live in a house with lots of windows...once the sun hits my kitchen windows, it's light and bright all day. Love it....And, my new little heater has cut the power bill in half...lovin' that too.

Just finished reading the third book from the series that had everyone enthralled...Eclipse...it was good, but I think I'm done with Vampires and Werewolves for the time being...Wendy says there's one more coming out though, so I'll have to read that. Am now reading the latest Scientific American report on "the rise of Nanotech"....so fascinating! I'd recommend it highly to those who might be interested.

That's it for life here in the fast lane...here's weather...hope you're all happy and healthy :)
<br She weighed 7 lbs.1 oz, and according to her proud Grandma is very alert, thumb in mouth. Amanda is doing fine, despite a very quick delivery that didn't allow time for the epidural. She's not too thrilled with doing things the old fashioned way, at the moment. Cory said the time of birth was exactly 6:30 A.M. Can't wait to see them all!! What a lovely way to start the day :)

Musings....

She was a remarkable woman with an inquisitive mind , and an adventurous spirit. She'd come to America as an immigrant from Switzerland shortly before her 20th birthday, along with an older brother. Their goal was much the same as today's immigrants, to start a new life in a country which promised opportunity and a better way of life.

My Mom would have been 97 years old today, and I'm remembering her fondly. I recall how she studied and struggled to pass the exam leading to U.S. citizenship....she probably knew more about the Constitution than most born in this country. I was only 5 when she took the test in 1940. She'd been in this country for about 11 years at that time. She had a strong and abiding faith in God, in her country of choice, and in her children....and I'm missing her today.

On another note...
I ran across this site this morning, and found it fascinating! Check it out, and be sure to click on the individual tiles....it'll keep you busy for awhile ...and it's pretty amazing.

Happy Anniversary Wendy and Brian!!

The local radio station is warning Halloween trick-or-treaters that if they see someone dressed as a bear, it might be a real one! The furry ones are venturing down farther into human habitat because of the drought. People (stupidly) have been putting food out for them, which only encourages them to return.

It's really Autumn here, and such a beautiful one. Weather is still lovely and the trees are just glorious. I haven't needed to turn on the furnace yet, thanks to my newly acquired Eden Pure heater....that Paul Harvey has the best ideas :) Since natural gas is going up up and up, I decided that electricity would be more economical, and at least so far that's proven to be true. Love this thing!!

Brian and Wendy are celebrating their day in Reno. The Atlantis sent them a comp for a free room and Italian feast...the menu sounded yummy...hope they're enjoying every moment.

Have a great weekend everyone.
<br Here in parched northern Nevada, that's a gift which would seem unimaginable to those in wetter climes. I've been hungry for a good old-fashioned gully washer, and that's exactly what we just got. Not the piddly little Summer sprinkles which have been in such short supply this year, but an ear-splitting, water-coursing-down-the windows display of nature at it's finest...it was so fabulous!

My Tux confronted each clap of thunder with his most menacing growl, the power went out for a bit, I ran back and forth through the house opening all the blinds to better watch the magic (the lightning was beautiful too), and now, too soon, it's over. The air does smell delicious and the gutters are still running from the overflow. I'm hoping for an afternoon repeat, but am grateful for, and in awe of the morning show. When I lived in Oregon, displays like that were common, and I never tired of them. Here, since they are so rare, I find myself really appreciating them even more....guess that's the secret.

When Linda and I had our early-morning visit by phone, she said that it was raining hard in Mesquite and it was dry as a bone here...glad it heard the envy in my voice and made its way up here. John is spending the weekend with Danny, they're going to a Doobie Brothers concert. Danny will bring him home tomorrow and we're hoping to all have dinner at Wendy's before Danny heads back to California and his family. So, life is good. type='text'>Labor Day...and other thoughts...

Three of my six kids were born on holidays. Debbie on Labor Day (and it was, in the true sense of the word), Linda and John on Mothers' Day, five years apart.

In those days, boy did I love the 50s, St. Mary's Hospital in Reno made a huge event of having a baby on Mothers' Day, complete with a candlelight steak and champagne dinner for the new mom and dad. John and Wendy were born at Washoe Medical, which had also picked up on the much-lauded Mothers' Day dinner...so I lucked out a second time. (culinarily speaking....Actually, I lucked out all six times)

Yesterday, I went for barbecue at Wendy's house...it was so nice. Brian grills a mean burger. The girls were delightful. Wendy and Brooke talked of reading Twilight, which Lori and her girls had told them about at the hospital. They loved it and are anxiously awaiting New Moon and the one after that which is supposed to be out in 07.....too long says Brooke. :)) What's anyone else reading these days? Share.

Today, I'm going to check out the garage sales....want to get back to selling on EBAY so time to check out what's out there.

I'm so anxious to see pictures and hear tales about Cora's birthday party!!! Hint hint.

Hope you're all having a nice long weekend....love you...

Remembering Debbie

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I was looking at the kids' pictures on my fridge this morning, thinking how nice it is to have the young'uns displayed there, and it hit me that all of those pictures are years old! There's Jarrett, Stephanie and Johnny...maybe more than five years old...Logan, at about 3...darling picture with the same little sweet face he has now, Naomi, sitting in a Christmas box when she was 1!, Cora in the apple basket...cute, but how old is that!, Brooke and Karlee on little plastic cards they got from school....elementary school!, Elizabeth and Elijah sitting on little blocks...oh so long ago. The most current pics I have are of DeEtte's kids (thank-you DeEtte), but it's too big for the fridge. Don't have a picture of Kaden at all!

So...here's your assignment, should you choose to accept it. I need small current photos of everybody!! Please? And for those of you with future babies coming along, Amanda and Carlie and anyone else, remember the rules. If you get started off on the right foot, I'll not need to nag you later. :))

We didn't get any rain at all yesterday, unfortunately...that rain-dance didn't help a bit, still hoping for today.

Here's weather all around....added Chandler, Arizona....Marty lives there and looks like she's getting the worst of the heat...poor type='text'>Did Anybody Watch This?!!

I just saw the last couple of minutes of the Little League World Series and it was so neat! A team from Georgia won 3-2 against Japan. The 12 year old who hit the winning homerun (can't remember his name, but won't forget that smile) was just glowing as he ran the bases. They were all running around hugging the players from Japan, some of whom were crying, and the joy was practically palpable! Too bad grownups can't duplicate that...not often anyway. Reminds me of what baseball was like "back in the day" :)
<img width='1' height='1'
